April 30 – May 4

Hello STEM Families!

Happy Star Wars Week! May the Fourth be with you! Also, Happy Cinco De Mayo! We have finally made it to 4th Quarter. This is always my favorite quarter, not because of it’s closeness to summer (though that is nice), but because of our awesome field trips to Catalina, Joshua Tree, and Yosemite and our topic of the human body! Get ready for some family life and dissection opt out sheets coming your way in the next week or so!

5th: The 5th graders are learning about the endocrine system and how these glands regulate their whole bodies! They are learning the role of each gland and how they work together to help them grow, digest food, and go through puberty! Ask your student about the role of the pituitary gland.

6th: 6th Grade students are learning about the respiratory system this week. They have already learning how the circulatory system moves blood around the body, and how oxygenated blood comes from the lungs to the heart, and then out to the body and back again. Now they will be concentrating on how the lungs insert oxygen into the blood stream and remove the carbon dioxide that we make as a by produce of cellular respiration.

7th: This week, the 7th graders are finishing up the skeletal system and moving onto the muscular system. The two systems are very connected (hahaha) and you can ask your student what will happen if we did not have a skeletal system!

8th: 8th Graders are learning about them impact that different enzymes play in our digestion of food. They will then be learning about how the nutrients from our food are absorbed after they are broken down by the enzymes and how these nutrients are used by our cells in cellular respiration. Looking for a topic to discuss over dinner? Ask your student about what causes lactose intolerance!

Every Wednesday, I have after school tutoring until 4:00, I cover all subjects in tutoring. If you ever need to get a hold of me you can message me through the Remind App, or email me at [email protected] If you have not signed up for the remind app yet, the codes are listed below and you can have your student help you to sign up.
