What is Digital Literacy?

Digital literacy is a student’s ability to find, comprehend, and communicate information using digital technology.

Digital literacy covers the following skills:

  • Technical Skills: Students learn the basic technical skills needed to use electronic devices and software. Students should learn how to use word processing software and create digital presentations.
  • Media Literacy: Students are given a foundation for understanding and critically analyzing various types of digital media.
  • Independent Research: Students learn to do online research using search engines, online databases, and other resources. They know how to assess the accuracy and potential bias of information they find online so they can make informed decisions.
  • Digital Conduct: Students learn about ethical online behavior, including digital etiquette and understanding the consequences and risks of activities online.
  • Digital Communication: Students learn how to use digital communication channels to communicate meaningfully and effectively.

Why is Digital Literacy Important?

The internet has dramatically reshaped our world, changing the way we work, socialize, and communicate. To prepare students to successfully navigate this new world that’s increasingly functioning online, it’s important to develop their digital literacy from a young age so they can more effectively use it to succeed academically and also in their personal lives.

A key challenge in today’s environment is that the internet has become saturated with inaccurate information and misinformation. Strong digital literacy, combined with excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, is essential in giving students the tools needed to make informed decisions.
