Musical Instruments Program for K-8 in San Diego

Old Town Academy is proud to offer a vibrant musical instruments program for K-8 students in San Diego.

Learning music helps children improve their focus, memory, and brain development, which can ultimately lead to them achieving higher academic and personal success. Unlike traditional elementary schools, which have suffered budget cuts that remove music and visual arts programs, music continues to be a core component of Old Town Academy’s curriculum.

OTA’s Musical Instruments Program

Music is an integral part of the curriculum at Old Town Academy, from kindergarten to 8th grade.

These days, many public schools are doing away with music and other forms of arts education.

We believe that no curriculum is complete without arts education—especially music. Learning music provides personal, academic, and developmental benefits for children, and research has shown that students who participate in music reach higher levels of academic achievement.

How Does Learning Music Benefit Children?

Learning music provides students with the following benefits:

  • Improved hand-eye coordination
  • Improved memory and information retention
  • Increased brain power and functionality
  • Improved social skills
  • Improved creativity, self-expression, and self-esteem

Does Learning Music Help Kids Focus?

Learning music can help children concentrate in school. Playing or participating in music activates both the left and right sides of the brain, which improves concentration, focus, and joy. These benefits can help students succeed academically and in other areas of their lives.

It’s important to remember that these benefits are created by “playing music” and not necessarily “listening to music.” The music curriculum at Old Town Academy is designed to help students understand music structure so they can learn to play musical instruments, and the benefits derived from learning music come from active participation and not only listening.

What Musical Instruments Are Taught at OTA?

Since learning music is a vital part of a child’s personal and academic development, Old Town Academy has fostered a strong musical instruments program for K-8 students in San Diego. Our students can learn how to play musical instruments, such as:

  • Ukulele
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Recorder
  • Piano

Our music education begins in kindergarten, where students learn the basic elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, etc.) and then they learn how to play musical instruments, with every successive grade bringing increasing skill, nuance, and musical understanding.
