Admissions Requirements

Priority is provided to students who reside within the 92110 and 92103 zip codes; additional priority to the extent available will be as set forth in the Old Town Academy Charter Petition.

Old Town Academy follows the following admission requirements, which are consistent with non-discriminatory statues.

  • Student and parent must read, sign, and return the OTA parent/student Handbook along with the required forms prior to enrollment at Old Town Academy.
  • OTA is a uniform school and full compliance with our uniform policy is expected.
  • OTA strives for paperless communication whenever possible. Parents and students are expected to check and review their emails nightly as well as actively monitor their classroom blogs and the OTA website for updates.
  • Separate applications are needed for each child/applicant.
  • Birth certificates or passports and updated immunization records are required for all new students to confirm enrollment
  • Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2024, and have all required immunizations before the start of the school year.
  • All incoming 7th graders will need updated TDAP immunizations/boosters before the end of the first week of school. There will be no new waivers for personal belief exemptions. For more information, please visit the Shots for School website.

Old Town Academy Lottery Procedures

When the number of valid applicants exceeds the available openings at OTA, we conduct a public lottery to fill the openings at random.

  1. Old Town Academy conducts an electronic lottery that draws from online applications.
  2. Applicants are notified via email of their application status.
  3. Failure to confirm enrollment within 24 hours will result in the spot being forfeited.
  4. Waitlisted applicants will be called to fill any openings and given 24 hours to confirm.

Application Verification

To reserve an enrollment position prior to full registration, admitted applicants must submit documents confirming ZIP code of residence, student age, and immunizations, as well as successful completion of the previous grade level to the Admissions Office.

Applicants who do not submit the required documents will forfeit their admission.

Enrollment Prioritization

Old Town Academy provides a sibling preference to applicants who are siblings of students currently attending OTA, as well as an employee preference to applicants who are children of employees currently employed by Old Town Academy.

OTA defines siblings as children who:

  • Are biologically related as siblings by one or two shared parents; OR
  • Are related as step-siblings by parent marriage; OR
  • Are related as siblings through formal adoption or formal court-ordered guardianship. (Power of Attorney does not suffice for this purpose.)

Charter School Complaint Notice

Charter schools may not discourage a pupil from enrolling or seeking to enroll in the charter school because the pupil exhibits any characteristics such as students with disabilities, academically low-achieving, English learners, neglected or delinquent, homeless, socially economically disadvantaged, foster youth, or based on nationality, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Charter schools are not allowed to request a pupil’s records before enrollment or encourage a child who is enrolled in a charter school to dis-enroll or transfer to another school.

A parent, guardian, or pupil (18 years or older) may file a Charter School Complaint Form to the authorizing entity if they suspect the charter school is in violation of Education Code Section 47605(d)(4). Click here to access the Enrollment Complaint Form.

“My son transferred from a public school and never enjoyed going to school. Now that he’s at OTA, he’s enthusiastic about going every day! His behavior has improved, he is more responsible, and I know it is in large part due to OTA instilling these values. I can’t give this school enough good praise!”

– OTA Parent

“Old Town Academy is a great school [with] a great music program, hands-on science, art, and caring staff. I love that we only have one main teacher like in elementary school, and the small class size is great.”
